Consulate General Spokesperson's Remarks on Nancy Pelosi's Visit to Taiwan

Consulate General Spokesperson: I feel obliged to comment on Eileen NG's article "Tension grows as Pelosi lands in Taiwan" on 2 August. The article points out that Pelosi's visit to Taiwan has triggered increased tensions between China and the United States. In my opinion, this visit is indeed reckless and provocative, bringing major trouble to China-U.S. relations and cross-straits peace and stability.

First of all, there is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. The one-China principle is a universal consensus of the international community and a basic norm in international relations. Since Pelosi is the incumbent leader of the U.S. Congress, her visit to Taiwan is a major political provocation to upgrade U.S. official exchanges with the region. This constitutes a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, seriously infringing upon China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Meantime, it gravely undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and sends a seriously wrong signal to the separatist forces for "Taiwan independence". The complete reunification of China is the aspiration of all Chinese people. China will do its utmost to promote this peacefully but will never tolerate attempts to split China.

The Taiwan question is purely China's internal affair which brooks no external interference. Like other sovereign nations, there's no room for compromise or concession. No one should underestimate the firm resolve, staunch will and strong ability of the Chinese people in defending national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Anyone with sense of responsibility should stop fueling tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
