Question: The Scotsman published an article titled “Ukraine conflict is a game changer for Asia” on 2 June. Do you have any comment?

Spokesperson: The article disregards the fact that Taiwan is part of China. It hypes the “China Threat”, fueling tensions across the Taiwan Strait. We firmly oppose it.

The speculations about the “invasion of Taiwan” are patently false because Taiwan has been an inalienable part of China’s territory for centuries. That’s why Taiwan was returned to China by Japan after World War II in accordance with the 1943 Cairo Declaration and the 1945 Potsdam Proclamation, to which the UK and US were parties. Most countries, including the US and UK, acknowledge the One China policy, which affirms that Taiwan is part of China.

The cause of the current tensions across the Taiwan Strait lies in that the regional authority of Taiwan obstinately seeks "Taiwan independence" and provokes confrontation between the two sides of the Strait, and some external forces manipulate the Taiwan question in an attempt to alienate China.

The complete reunification of China is the aspiration of  all Chinese people. China will do its utmost to promote this peacefully but will never tolerate attempts to split China.

The Taiwan Question is purely China’s internal affair which brooks no external interference. Like other sovereign nations there’s no room for compromise or concession. No one should underestimate the firm resolve, staunch will and strong ability of the Chinese people in defending national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The article hypes up the so-called “China Threat” by correlating Taiwan with Ukraine. This dangerous distortion smacks of the old cold war mentality. Indeed, in responding to global concerns on security, China has proposed the “Global Security Initiative” built on the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security. The international community is asked to discard the cold war mindset and reject bloc confrontation. China is committed to making Asia an anchor for world peace, and strongly opposes any attempts to incite confrontation or inflame tensions. The fear-mongering must not be allowed to prevail.
